News & Newspapers

We know that newspapers appeal to certain people because of their political views, but to what extent does a paper’s opinions affect the truth of a story? In England recently one of the ´hot´ topics in the papers has been the legal drug ´Mephedrone´ and its dangers and effects. However, rather than getting to the truth of the matter, some newpapers, in particular the classically right wing papers have been reactionary, whilst the more Liberal papers, such as the Guardian have run stories in which specialists have spoken about the drug. Both papers are running the story with defined political sub-plots; the Conservative papers such as the Daily Mail are only interested in making the drug illegal and its users criminals, whereas the Liberal papers are interested in opening the debate about legalisation. So we can see from this case that to a certain extent the politics of a certain paper can affect the way the ´truth´ is given to us.
